Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle technique of a slow, rhythmic stretching of the skin to stimulate the lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes within the lymphatic system. The movement of the skin accelerates the re-absorption of tissue fluid into the lymphatic channels, increasing the effectiveness of excess lymph fluid filtered through the lymph nodes. This technique reroutes the lymphatic fluid away from the congested area to healthy lymphatic vessels resulting in decrease swelling in the affected limb.
The proper garment fitting is imperative to maintain the results of the CDT/Intensive phase. Accuracy is very important when measuring for a compression garment. This can make a considerable difference in the fit and comfort of the garment. No compression garment is created equal or one size fits all. Complete Decongestive Therapy is the gold standard therapy for the management of lymphedema. CDT consist of skin and nail care, manual lymphatic drainage, multi-layering of compression bandages, and education on remedial exercise. It is broken down into 2 phases the intensive phase which focuses on decongesting the limb and the maintenance phase which focuses on maintaining the results of the first phase.
Compression bandaging is a component of the first phase of lymphedema therapy. The compression bandaging goal is to help decongest the limb of any excess fluid. Multilayering of short stretcher bandages assists with preventing re-accumulation of fluid within the affected limb. This helps with the efficiency of the muscle pumps in the affected limb. The ultimate goal is to decrease the amount of swelling to allow for compression garments to be worn.
